"Middle school is overrated," thought Amanda. She was so angry! She couldn't believe that her life-long BFFL, Emma Persy, just ditched her for Selena Stuarts, the most popular girl! And just to make it worse, Amanda couldn't believe that she was failing science AND eighth grade math. To relieve her stress, she decided to do her favorite hobby: skateboarding. Amanda was racing down the sidewalks on her skateboard, trying to do all her tricks. The wind started blowing her blond hair in her face, which caused her to overlook a rock in her path. It got caught in her wheel, which caused her to flip over. Amanda screamed in frustration. Why does middle school seem like it's awesome to everyone, and a nightmare to her? She shrieked in pain. Her ankle felt like it was twisted, cracked, and broken at the same time. Amanda started crying, looking around her subdivision for someone to help her. Amanda wanted to pull out her cell phone and call her mom. "Oh, wait. I don't even HAVE a cell phone!" thought Amanda. Ever since she started middle school she hated her life. Great. Now all she had to do was drag herself on the scratchy sidewalk all the way to her house, which was four whole blocks away. According to her mint green watch, by the time she had gotten home it was an hour and forty five minutes later. When she got home, her mom started getting angry with her, how it was the fourth time she was out really late. "It was only seven fifty when I left!" Amanda yelled back. "It's May, and it's daylight longer! Why does it matter anyway?!" "It's a school night and you need to study, unless you want to fail math AND science!" Her mom shouted. Amanda started screaming and crying at once, because the pain of her ankle was too much for her to bear. Her mom asked what was wrong, then Amanda told her everything that happened. "Sounds broken. Get in the car. We're going to the hospital." Amanda got mad again. "By myself?! I can't carry myself! It hurts!" She whined. "Be thankful that we are even going to hospital. Besides, I got to carry your baby sister, Margie. I can't leave her home alone. Now stop arguing with me! Go get in the car!" Amanda didn't bother to say anything. She just helplessly limped to the car in pain, while whimpering. Amanda woke up the next morning from Margie's crying. She shook her head. She remembered how the doctor claimed that she completely broke her ankle AND her foot! Now She was stuck with a sunny yellow cast covering her foot up to her knee. Amanda got to stay home the first few days, which relieved her. Until her mom came into her mom and piled her nightstand with four days worth of old, missing, math and science assignments! "Look at the positive side," said her mom. "Now you have plenty of time to catch up on your missing assignments. And I don't want to hear any excuses." And it didn't help when her mom added to the pile with math, science, english, history, and spanish homework from missing two days of school! Amanda sighed. "How will I be able to do any of this?!" She cried. "Calm down. You're getting worked up over nothing. Remember, you broke your foot, not your hands.Besides, what else will you be able to do?" She gritted her teeth. "Well, I only can watch TV, listen to my MP3, sleep, go on the laptop, and talk on the phone with Kaitlin."Her mom glared at her. "Now don't get mouthy with me missy! I'm your mother and don't make me ground you!" "I thought you already grounded me with homework," muttered Amanda. "Go tell dad. It'll give you guys something else to fight about. That's all you guys are seem like you're good at anyway." Amanda's mom looked shocked to upset, then hurt . She wish she never said that. Her mom was too stunned to say anything. Her mom slowly, silently left the room. Hours later Amanda heard shouting and yelling downstairs coming from her parents room. Just like always for the past six months now. She used to hear just irritating discussions, until a month later it turned into simple arguing. Then a month after that it, sarcasm entered her parents argument. And a month after that it was shouting, shouting, shouting. "That's how it always is now," Amanda said softly. Later her dad strolled into her room. "Honey, we need to discuss something. I'm sure you've heard our arguments before. I have some good news, and some bad news for you. The good news is that all this arguing, and disagreeing is stopping." She blew out a sigh of relief. Now she would be able to sleep better. "The bad news for you is that me and your mom are getting a divorce." "WHAT?!" She shrieked. "You didn't even try to handle your problems! You were just screaming at each other every day for hours! What does that do?!" Her dad tried to calm Amanda, but he couldn't. "You guys didn't even care about each other enough. Then why did you bother to get married? Why did you even bother to have kids like me and Margie?" "All these months we HAVE been trying to handle our problems, but when we realized nothing was working out like it should've, our arguments got bigger. So we realized after half a dozen of months after trying, that we couldn't solve or change anything, we had to get a divorce. Oh, and, sweetie? We have other bad news for you. You know how Kaitlin's mom is a homemaker?" Amanda nodded. "Well her dad got laid off and he can't find another job, and Kailtlin's family needs money badly. Her dad thankfully was lucky enough to find one in Texas. So Kaitlin's family is moving to Texas at the end of the month." She couldn't believe it. So she began to protest. "But we live in Pennsylvania! Why couldn't they just at least try to find a job in Washington D.C.?! Or Virginia? What about West Virginia?" Her dad shook his head. "But they did sweetie, but the only jobs were very low paying. So Kaitlin is moving to Texas." "But she's all I got left." Tears streamed out. Her dad got up to leave her room. As he was about to close the door, he said,"I'm very sorry honey." And he left her bedroom. "If they were really sorry, they would buy me a cell phone in case I break a leg while skateboarding, or to talk with Kaitlin in Texas. If they were really sorry, they would take classes on marriage and wouldn't get a divorce," she said quietly. Then she had a really good cry.
What would you do if you were Amanda? Just so you know, this is a fictional story I wrote. Just think to yourself and say,"If I were Amanda, would I do the same?" Just giving something for you to think about.
